Post-capitalist City Dictionary

Exploring potential change in professional language

Creative Industries Kick-start Grant Scheme | Stimulieringsfonds | Team: Anna Kozera, Marina Samveljan, Kate Unsworth

This project is concerned with mapping the (neoliberal) assumptions embedded in the professional language of urbanism, architecture and area development. It also aims to find a suitable form for, and test a process to create a tool of inclusive terminology.

The project intends to:

  1. Map the ways our professional language unconsciously influences our (design) choices.

  2. Map the gaps where professional language disconnects urban design from inhabitants by looking at concepts and vocabulary.

  3. Propose valid replacements and recommendations for inclusive choices of words and ideas in both Dutch and English.

This kick-off application is focused on an exploration of the potential of this topic to become a bigger project where we communicate our findings though an accessible tool (dictionary, glossary, or other). We will carry out a preliminary event to test and develop the feasibility of our methods (collective knowledge creation) and to build interest in the idea.
